The road back to the ice is difficult for Noah Schneeberger. The HC Davos defender only played seven games before he had to take a break with a knee injury. Then comes October 17th.
It is the day that Schneeberger is involved in a serious car accident in Davos GR. He talks about it with the “Bieler Tagblatt” and says how lucky he was: “If everything had gone normally, I would be dead now.”
When he saw the truck coming towards the car, he just shouted at the driver. “The impact came so quickly that I thought it was all over now.” Fortunately it didn’t get that far. Schneeberger, who describes himself as an ‘intuitive person’, immediately got to work: ‘I wanted to keep the driver awake. I shouted at him and told him to just concentrate on his breathing.”
He also called his brother and his physiotherapist in the car and took painkillers he had in the car for his damaged knee. “My friend, who is a doctor, just laughed at that,” he reveals.
But the knee was no longer his biggest physical problem. “I was in tremendous pain and clutching my leg. It pointed in a certain direction.” He saw his career dwindle and returning to the ice was no longer a problem for him. He just asked himself the question of a normal life.
The certified professional masseur had a hard time in the weeks that followed: “I felt like a stranger in my body.” Every time he closed it, he had the truck before his eyes. That’s why, as he says, he sought psychological help for the first time in his life. «I accepted everything. I was just so helpless. You have to have someone for everything.” The traumatologist then praised him for trying to process what happened in the car.
The accident was followed by a week’s stay in the hospital in Chur, then three weeks of rehabilitation in Rheinfelden AG, where he was confined to a wheelchair. “It was definitely not an experience you would want. But it was still educational to see what it was like.”
After his clinical rehabilitation, the Langenthaler was transferred to Magglingen. At his request, because he deals with athletes there every day and can exchange ideas with them: “It helps me to discuss things with them.”
Schneeberger can now imagine himself returning to the ice: “I believe in myself that I can do it.” He has largely come to terms with the accident and “I was allowed to let him go” in Chur hospital. He didn’t complain because it wasn’t fate: “It was an accident.” (ch)
