Alexander Zverev’s achievements are overshadowed by an accusation against him, but he still marches into the semi-finals.

Alexander Zverev has faced more headwinds at the Australian Open than ever before. On the one hand, there was his faltering start with two sets of five sets including match tiebreaks. The world number six almost failed sensationally early.

On the other hand, right at the beginning of the tournament, Zverev received a summons for the end of May, which overshadowed his performances on the court. The German is accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea. Because he appealed against a fine, a trial is now underway.

Zverev, who is presumed innocent until final conviction, strongly denies the charges. And the debate that broke out over why he, a professional who has to answer to the courts, was recently elected to the ATP Players’ Council appears to have had no impact on his sporting achievements.

Will Zverev stay cool against Medvedev?

Zverev’s quarter-final against Alcaraz was a real gala at times. The Hamburger seemed transformed: he played braver, more attacking, was extremely strong at the net and irresistible in service. “That’s how he wins the Australian Open,” says Eurosport expert Boris Becker (56): “That is the best Zverev I have ever seen.”

And enfant terrible Nick Kyrgios (28) also thought the performance was “playful, tactical and mentally impressive”. And he also says: “Serving like that against a player like Alcaraz is almost absurd. I’m also a good server, but I don’t think I’ve achieved that yet.”

Provocateur Daniil Medvedev (27, Friday morning) now awaits in the semi-finals. Will Zverev be able to keep his cool and reach his second Grand Slam final?
