Fifty-time Dutch international Quincy Promes has been sentenced to nine years in prison in his home country.

Quincy Promes (32) played 50 international matches for the Netherlands. But in recent years, the Spartak Moscow striker has made a name for himself not with his football talent, but with his criminal activities.

In 2022, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison in the Netherlands for assault – he attacked his cousin with a knife. Promes, who lives in Russia, never served his sentence. Last year he was charged by the Dutch Public Prosecution Service with cocaine smuggling. The accusation: Promes allegedly smuggled more than 1.3 tons of cocaine together with a business partner in 2020. Two shipments were seized in the port of Antwerp (Belgium). He and his uncle, who has been in custody since the spring of 2023, are said to be part of a network of drug dealers.

There is a risk of nine years in prison

Now Promes is looking forward to a long time behind bars. The Public Prosecution Service in Amsterdam demanded a prison sentence of nine years on Wednesday. Promes himself was not present in the courtroom. According to his lawyer, he was unable to attend due to commitments to his club.

However, if the Russian legionary travels to his homeland in the future, he will be immediately arrested. But Promes is not safe abroad either: an international arrest warrant has been issued for the footballer.

However, Promes is protected by his club Spartak. As Dutch media reported at the end of 2022, the club reportedly applied for a Russian passport for its delinquent attacker. There is no extradition treaty between Russia and the Netherlands. If Promes remains in Moscow, the Dutch authorities will not be able to reach him. (sbe)
