Even before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, there were many concerns about the Black Stars. There was a lack of identification with the fans, a failed integration of star players into the team or even a questionable preference for a goalkeeper. It now appears that Irish national coach Chris Hughton (65) was probably wrong with the latter.

Because Richard Ofori (30), who was suddenly put in front of Espen goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi again, becomes a tragic figure in the match against Mozambique on Monday evening. A few minutes after the final whistle, many fans vented their frustration at Ofori, who had already behaved insecurely in the previous two group matches. “Ofori, if you love your country, then you resign,” is a comment on the text messaging service X that is still very moderate compared to others. “How did Richard Ofori become a professional? “What a damn clown,” says another. On Instagram, the tone is similar: “He should run home” or “Take him into exile outside Ghana,” say fans there.

But the frustration is not only directed at Ofori. Former Newcastle United and Brighton coach Chris Hughton is also losing weight after the embarrassing group stage. “Chris Hughton is probably the worst coach in the history of the Black Stars,” said one X user. The background to this criticism is not only the wasted lead on Monday evening, but also the entire development of the team in recent weeks and months.

So Hughton never really succeeded in giving his team a real (attacking) game idea. In addition, he repeatedly raised eyebrows at strange changes, special preferences for players – such as the goalkeepers – or the isolation of the stars from the media and the public. The results also left a lot to be desired: in twelve games with the Black Stars he won only four times.

It is quite possible that this misunderstanding will soon be over. “Chris Hughton’s contract officially expires on December 31, 2024. Frankly, it is difficult to imagine that Hughton will continue to coach after his team’s performance after the African Cup of Nations,” said Ghanaian sports journalist Emmanuel Ayamga.
