With the disciplinary suspension of Cristiano Ronaldo at home in front of the television, Manchester United drew 1-1 in the Chelsea away game. Earlier in the day, Manchester City beat Brighton 3-1 thanks largely to Erling Haaland.
Chelsea looked set to win after taking the lead from a Jorginho penalty just before the end. The ball was on target after United midfielder Scott McTominay quite demonstratively pulled down former Vitesse player Armando Broja from a corner.
The lead was hardly deserved as the two English top clubs turned it into a typical 0-0 game. The chances were slim, although coach Erik ten Hag’s team were slightly overweight. Chelsea, however, were a little more menacing. Just before the 1-0, Trevoh Chalobah hit the crossbar with a header.
United equalized in the fourth minute of added time. According to the referee’s clock, a header from Casemiro to the inside of the post went completely over the goal line. It was Chelsea’s first goal in five consecutive zero games.
In addition to the two late goals, Raphaël Varane’s injury was also at stake. The United France defender slipped while trying to tackle Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Varane left the field in tears after undergoing injury treatment in a sign that he feared for his World Cup participation in Qatar. The 71-time international did not miss a minute of the 2018 World Cup won by France.
Coach Ten Hag has not yet been able to clarify the severity of the injury. “It’s hard to say what it is so soon after the game. We’ll have to wait 24 hours and then we’ll know more.”
The goal machine, which goes by the name of Erling Haaland, was also running at full speed again on Saturday afternoon. The Norwegian striker helped Manchester City score twice against Brighton & Hove Albion (3-1).
Haaland has already scored 17 goals in eleven league games in the Premier League. If he keeps this average, the 22-year-old attacker has 58 goals.
Haaland opened in the middle of the first half, nota bene with a pass from goalkeeper Ederson. The striker took a long chest shot, dodging Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez who ran wildly out of his goal. Then Haaland ran through a block from defender Adam Webster – who is certainly not the least physically – and pushed the ball into the empty goal.
Haaland’s second goal was a penalty just before half-time. The ball went precisely after a tap by Bernardo Silva.
Brighton, who started Joël Veltman, came back into the game shortly after the break via Leandro Trossard. The Belgian had a nice chance to equalize after 70 minutes, but found Ederson from close range.
The finest goal of the afternoon came moments later on behalf of a Trossard compatriot. Kevin De Bruyne had all the time and space to score around 20 yards from goal and shot the ball cleanly into the cross.
The home win puts City more firmly in second place behind leaders Arsenal. The Londoners have a point more and meet Southampton tomorrow.
Liverpool lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest this morning. City colleague Everton won 3-0 against Crystal Palace.
