What a suit! Lara Gut-Behrami loses 4.49 seconds to the best time. Yet she is sixth.

Lara Gut-Behrami (32) has been in the ski circus for 16 years. But she has never experienced such a crazy race as this in Jasna (Slk).

The Ticino woman loses 4.49 seconds to the Swedish high flyer Sara Hector (31). A defeat! Or not? The fact is: your monster deficit is enough to finish sixth. And because Federica Brignone (33, It) is eliminated after just four goals, she takes the lead in the Giant Slalom World Cup.

“These distances are crazy”

This is no consolation to the Gut-Behrami – this is evident in their TV interviews. «These distances are crazy. The only positive thing is that I am going home safely,” she says. Your analysis is understandable, as crazy things happen in the Low Tatras. But first things first.

When Gut-Behrami reached the finish in the first run with starting number 2, everything still seemed fine. She shakes her head slightly, but she hasn’t made any mistakes. Then Hector follows. With strength and skill she smashes Gut-Behrami’s goal and is 2.97 seconds faster. “You can usually pack your things at this distance,” says Gut-Behrami. In the second run she lost another 1.52 seconds to Hector, making a total of 4.49 seconds.

Own goal by Swiss-Ski?

“I have rarely experienced time gaps of this magnitude at the World Cup,” said Swiss women’s head coach Beat Tschoor. The question is: how did it get to this point? The slope is not particularly difficult, the weather is normal (minus 8 degrees) and the surface is well prepared. Or? “When we drove down the slope on Friday, everything looked beautiful. “But everything changed during the night, suddenly we were driving on a mixture of ice and very aggressive snow,” says Gut-Behrami.

She can’t handle it. In the first run, their material arrangement is too sharp. “The mood was not right at all, I didn’t get a single punch. It slowed me down from head to toe,” Gut-Behrami said.

She doesn’t even like the very winding course of Swiss trainer Heini Pfitscher. Did Swiss-Ski score an own goal? Tschuor says no: “It is true that Lara would have liked the course to be less rhythmic. But it rarely works if you want to bet specifically for your own team. Heini Pfitscher solved this task well.”

Austria’s historic bankruptcy

Many drivers also seem frightened by the fall of Petra Vlhova (28, Slk), others run out of fuel at some point. “I’m still whole – sometimes you forget these things,” Gut-Behrami comforts herself.

After all: the Swiss team is convincing. Camille Rast (9th) proves her form is improving and Mélanie Meillard is 13th and riding better than she has in six years. Simone Wild (17th) and Jasmina Suter (20th) also scored points, while Michelle Gisin (30) disappointed and missed the second point.

Five Swiss women in the points? You can only dream of that in Austria. No one makes the final rankings – this hasn’t happened since 1985.
