What does the Federal Council do now?: German officials check every tram from Switzerland

Since mid-October, the German federal police have been checking almost every tram that runs from Basel across the border into Germany. Other national borders with Switzerland are also affected. Anyone who does not have valid papers will be sent back to Switzerland or to a first reception center for asylum seekers in Germany.

According to CH Media, each inspection takes between three and ten minutes. Very annoying for commuters who have to expect delays every day. For example, the Basler-Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB) has to divert a number of tram lines to prevent additional delays. There are still complaints from passengers.

3700 entries prevented

The reason for the checks is the decision by the German Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser (53), to temporarily reintroduce border controls with Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland. At the Swiss national borders, German officials prevented 3,700 entries in October and November. Germany wants to curb illegal immigration. The checks should last at least until mid-March.

Germany expands border controls with Switzerland

The then Swiss Minister of Justice, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (60), was not very enthusiastic about the decision. The Federal Council wants Switzerland to be exempted from the inspection regime again. Especially since there is already a joint action plan against illegal migration. But so far without success. Baume-Schneider believes that cross-border policing and strengthening the EU’s external border are necessary to combat illegal migration.

SVP wants to follow the German example

Now the new Minister of Justice Beat Jans (59) must handle the file and convince Faeser to reverse her decision.

The SVP has been campaigning for the reintroduction of border controls in Switzerland for some time. However, the Federal Council is against this step because Switzerland continues to carry out identity checks on suspected persons and systematic border control is only important if there is a serious threat to internal security.
