Everything was fine during the inspection, but hours later Rémi Cuche was suspected of a knee injury.

The Kitzbüheler “Streif” once again lives up to its reputation as the most dangerous descent in the world. And in the second training, this ‘beast’ also hurt the man who has the record with five victories. Obviously this means Didier Cuche (49).

The “faster” arrived in the Tyrolean Gams city before the first training to facilitate the debut of his cousin Rémi on the Hahnenkamm. On Monday evening he showed the 23-year-old, who earned his first World Cup appearance with second place in the European Cup in Saalbach, the correct line using video recordings. During Tuesday’s training, Rémi implemented this input very well: he lost almost four seconds on his first trip. The young Cuche also started the second training ride promisingly; in the first stage he was two tenths behind.

But before you climb the steep slope, the big shock follows! Rémi is hit hard, causing his skis to eat into the snow. He can avoid a fall, but he can’t continue driving. He is holding his knee and his face is contorted in pain. Uncle Didier sees these ugly images on the monitor in the coaching zone. He wipes a few tears from his eyes and says, “It looks like Rémi tore his ACL.”

Whether this is actually the case will only become clear on Thursday or Friday. An MRI will only be done when you get home.

For Rémi it would be the third serious setback in his racing career. Between March 2019 and September 2020 he tore both cruciate ligaments.

Violent trap of Israeli in mousetrap

Immediately after Cuche’s accident, the following drama takes place on the Streif: the Hungarian-born Israeli Barnabas Szollos flies way too far into the mousetrap and is crushed so violently in the compression that he flies off horribly, with his face on the pimple – hard blow the slope.

As the 25-year-old’s helmet flies off on the first impact, many observers are reminded of images of Austrian Hans Grugger, who suffered serious traumatic brain injuries in his horror mousetrap crash in 2011. Szollos miraculously escapes with a broken jaw.
