Former world number one Arantxa Sanchez Vicario was sentenced to two years in prison in Barcelona for hiding assets in connection with a multi-million bank loan that had to be repaid.
However, the 52-year-old, who won four Grand Slam tournaments between 1989 and 1998, will not have to serve time behind bars. The court has conditionally suspended the sentence, the judicial media agency reported upon request. This sentence allows this if there are no previous convictions, as is the case with Sanchez Vicario.
Her ex-husband, who managed her assets, was sentenced to three years and three months in prison. This punishment cannot be suspended. His lawyer is considering filing an appeal, writes the newspaper ‘La Vanguardia’. Sanchez Vicario and her ex-husband also had to pay the bank more than 6.6 million euros. (SDA)
