The second Kitzbühel training was overshadowed by a shocking fall by Israeli Barnabos Szollos. Cuche’s cousin Remi also had to be rescued from the helicopter with a suspected cruciate ligament injury. From a sporting point of view, Nils Allegre won the second training session in Kitzbühel.

How important is his best time for the race? Few. Too many athletes slow down shortly before the finish line. Marco Odermatt is one of them. Ultimately he ends up in 20th place, losing 1.19 seconds on the best time. As in Wengen, his worst competition on Saturday will probably be Cyprien Sarrazin (+0.82, 12th place).

What Odermatt and Sarrazin also share off the podium: both make a mistake exiting the steep slope. Although the photos cannot be compared, this spot still brings back memories of last year for Swiss ski fans: Odermatt lifts him up the steep slope, briefly sends him head-on towards the safety nets before miraculously avoiding the fall. Instead of a bad fall, Odermatt suffered “only” a minor meniscus injury and a short break from competition.

Odermatt is also concerned about this outing after the second training on Wednesday. Because it moves him easily, causing him to get too deep. “The exit didn’t go as well as I wanted.” To have sufficient speed on the follow-up section, a higher line is needed, which is what Odermatt is aiming for for the race.

Material problem at Hintermann

Niels Hintermann lands directly in front of Odermatt and is very satisfied after his ride. Because the execution is correct, but especially because the material is correct. This was not the case on Tuesday. “The skis sometimes had a mind of their own,” says Hintermann. He does not want to reveal exactly where the problem was: “The most important thing is that we were able to respond quickly. Work is underway to ensure this does not happen again.”

Before the start of the second training, Hintermann had an “unpleasant feeling”. “There was definitely a lack of trust.” It is all the more important for him that he controlled the ride, especially in the gliding part, the material seems to have worked so that he can start the race on Saturday with the necessary confidence.
