She knows how to party. The woman from Freiburg has been on the podium in every World Cup of the season.

More than a hundred points. That’s how big Mathilde Gremaud’s (23) lead is over the competition in the general freeski rankings. Your mid-season balance: four matches, four podium places. Three of them top the podium. She also wants to make her mark at the prestigious Laax Open from Wednesday.

Gremaud does not show that she is the hunted one. As usual, she faced the media in a calm manner the day before. This is exactly where the key to your success lies. “It has a lot to do with the mental side. When I am free in my mind, everything is possible,” explains the Freiburg resident. The 2022 Olympic slopestyle champion is not interested in what the (currently hopeless) competition is doing. The focus is on her.

The excellent results this season do not surprise slopestyle coach Grégory Tüscher. “She is incredibly talented and always dares to leave her comfort zone.” In addition, there is a fantastic body feeling. Gremaud is fit and clearly enjoying every minute on the skis.

More attention to freestyle skis?

When she’s not on the freestyle bars, she might be cheering on her Alpine colleagues in front of the TV. “When I have time, I watch ski races and keep my fingers crossed for the Swiss.” If you compare Gremaud’s season, her performance comes close to that of Alpine superstar Marco Odermatt. While the hype around Odi grows with every race, the freeskier remains in the background. Does that bother her? “Oh well. For me personally it’s fine as it is. But I would like more attention for our sport, that would be nice!”

Teammate Andri Ragettli (25) agrees with Gremaud. He is motivated by the lack of attention. And he emphasizes how far the young freestyle sport has already come. “When I stood on a World Cup podium for the first time seven years ago, no one was particularly interested.” World Championships are now broadcast live. That makes him proud, says the Graubündenner. And Mathilde Gremaud certainly knows it too. The sport of freestyle is on the right track.
