After the defeat on Friday a week ago against bottom team Ajoie (1:5), Tigers attacker Julian Dirt (29) did not mince his words. “We were not there,” he says in the MySports interview. The team from Emmental conceded 0-1 after just nine seconds in this match.

A week later, at the next basement duel in Kloten, it is dirt that ensures a better start. This time it is the Zurich Unterländer who are not there after 13 seconds when dirt hits.

The Bernese player later equalized to make it 2-2, taking advantage of his shot and cross combination not being parried by goalkeeper Metsola. He then completed the hat trick with the 5-2 in the empty goal and ensured that Langnau won again after eight defeats.

“I play best when I don’t think too much.”

Anyone who sees dirt wouldn’t think they were meditating the afternoon before the game. He’s like sandpaper on the ice. There’s a lot of friction where he is. He is emotional and gets under the skin of his opponents. Brake in time for the gate? Avoiding an opponent? Shut your mouth? That’s not the problem with dirt. If he had a different name, you would easily write here about a playing style in the style of rock elder Chris von Rohr: “Meh Dräck.”

In a remarkable interview with the “Berner Zeitung” before Christmas, grime explained what meditation brings him. “It’s about shutting down and not thinking about anything for 15 minutes. “I play best when I don’t think too much,” says the striker. “After a bad match I can think for a long time and then the mental drama starts. Mental training is therefore of fundamental importance to me; I have been investing a lot in this area for years.”

After a period at HCD, the former SCB junior returned to the Tigers, where he was given a bigger role and now has 14 goals to his name. He is just one goal away from his personal NL record, which he set in his debut season in Biel in 2016/17. Dirt, who harmonizes perfectly with top scorer Saarela, has scored nine goals in the last ten games.

Tears and existential fears during the pandemic

The father of the family came to wider public attention during the pandemic when he broke down in tears after one of the financially stricken Tigers’ many defeats and admitted he was plagued by existential fears. “The 60 minutes on the ice are the only days when everything is normal. I also have a family and this situation weighs heavily on me,” he said.

SCL dirt concerns: “The helplessness is the worst.”(01:12)

But it wasn’t just about the finances, he says three and a half years later. “My life’s dream was in danger of collapsing. Ice hockey is a part of me, I was afraid of losing part of my life.” He received letters at the time insulting him as a “big wimp.” “But I’m just someone who questions everything fifteen times, so the situation has had an influence on me. But there were also positive reactions: fans hung a banner at my house with the text ‘A nasty site.’

The former wrestling talent does not have to worry about the future at the moment. He signed a three-year contract with the Tigers and with Friday’s victory the Langnauers increased their lead over the Zurich Unterländer and a play-out place to eleven points.
