“That’s racist”: experts welcome SFV ad against Tiktoker

Where is the line between satire and racism? The Swiss Football Association (SFV) believes that the Tiktoker “bireweichesouhund” alias Mirco Casorelli has exceeded this. Namely with his comments about national team players, which he makes in his video series ‘Singkontrolle’. Terms such as “Schachtelgrinde” or “fearful figure” constitute a violation of the racism penalty standard Art 216bis StGB.

It remains to be seen whether there will be a conviction. In any case, the Federal Commission against Racism (EKR) is certain: “Yes, the statements of the SFV are racist and xenophobic. Law enforcement authorities must now assess whether they are also criminally relevant.”

When asked by Blick, EKR explains: “The statements are an insult to footballers because of their national or ethnic origin, or they are ridiculed in a derogatory way. In our opinion, the satirical component is not immediately apparent.”

The Commission is pleased that the SFV has sent a clear signal with the advertisement. When asked where the line lies between racism and humor, the EKR says: “It always depends on the context. Simply saying it’s a joke doesn’t make a racist joke any less racist. The question must always be asked who laughs with whom about what and who has to endure being laughed at without being able to defend themselves. Intention and context play a central role in this assessment. Humor should not be used to violate human dignity, nor to spread demeaning and negative attitudes.”

The cantonal police of Bern, which received the SFV report, have started an investigation. Casorelli then has to explain himself to the police. Speaking to Blick, he denied racist ulterior motives in his videos: “That’s ridiculous! I am absolutely not a racist. My father is Italian, my wife has a dark skin color. The videos are satire.”
