Rafael Nadal is back in impressive form after his long injury break, but the 37-year-old Spaniard is not entirely spared from setbacks on his comeback tour. During his impressive round of 16 victory over Jason Kubler at the ATP tournament in Brisbane, Nadal was given a warning – for exceeding the time limit while going to the toilet.
“It was a bit strange because I knew I only had five minutes,” Nadal admitted afterwards in a humorous interview with the on-court reporter, who casually asked him about the strange situation: “To be honest, Brisbane is very humid. I had to take off all the clothes one by one, and that takes a while.”
Still, Nadal, who was repeatedly told via walkie-talkie how long the five-minute break lasted, thought he had returned in time. In the end, however, his excursion lasted four seconds too long.
“Maybe the man responsible told me the times a little too late,” Nadal speculated to laughter from the crowd. “I thought I was on time, but I know I am slow and I will try to improve that in 2024.” (AFP/men)
