Three months after his dismissal from FC Basel, Timo Schultz (46) has a new job. The North German heads a few hundred kilometers down the Rhine, where he has to save 1. FC Köln from relegation from the Bundesliga.
In his presentation on Thursday afternoon, Schultz also commented for the first time on his departure from Basel at the end of September.
FCB boss David Degen (40) described Schultz’s choice of coach after his dismissal as a “mistake” and spoke about “a number of things” that had happened within the team. But Schultz has no problem with public criticism of his former boss. «When a divorce happens, it is rarely the case that you say goodbye to peace, joy and pancakes. That is absolutely okay for me,” said the new Cologne coach.
He is still in contact with those responsible in Basel. «FCB is a really great club. Unfortunately, we did not achieve sporting success so quickly. “It was a very educational time for me as a coach,” Schultz reflects.
Unlike the summer in Basel, the experienced Bundesliga professional in Cologne will likely start the second half of the season with the team he met when he started. FIFA has imposed a transfer ban on the Billy Goats for allegedly inciting breach of contract when signing a Slovenian youth player.
The fact that Cologne is now not allowed to attract new players almost suits Schultz. “Last summer I did something completely different. I happily accept the transfer ban. There was a lot of movement in the squad in Basel, with additions and departures. We already have a good team here,” Schultz said. In the first half of the season, Cologne only scored ten points in 16 games with this team. The club is currently in 17th place. After FCB, the next powder keg awaits Schultz.
