Ski jumping dispute over winner Wellinger: accusation of nonsense due to hole in the sleeve

Clearly visible: the hole under Andreas Wellinger’s armpit after qualifying.

The Germans celebrate ski jumping hero Andreas Wellinger. The 28-year-old won the opening match at the Four Hills Tournament on Friday evening. The joy? Gigantic! “It’s incredible to win in front of this crowd, in front of so many fans. The victory is very, very high.” Wellinger even compares the opening success with his Olympic victory in 2018.

The small catch: less than 24 hours after the triumph in Oberstdorf, there is already a fuss about the result of the first match on tour because of Wellinger’s suit. Norwegian media report an irregular suit that the German is said to have worn in the qualification, which he won. If you look closely, you can even see that the eventual winner’s suit has a hole under the armpit.

FIS employee Christian Kathol, who checks the professionals’ suits for accuracy, told Norwegian broadcaster ‘nrk’ after the opening match: “If he had been with me after qualifying and I had seen the suit, he should have been disqualified . .”

No clear evidence

One thing is clear: a suit with a hole does not comply with the rules. It could not be clarified whether Wellinger actually flew with the damaged suit during qualifying or not. At the very least, TV images should show that the hole in the suit appeared after the German’s flight.

Fortunately for Wellinger: Neither the opponents nor the association lodged a protest after qualifying, so the result of the opening match remains valid in any case.

The Germans can therefore continue to dream of their first overall victory on the tour since Sven Hannawald’s triumph in 2002, when he won all competitions. After a day’s break, qualifying continues on New Year’s Eve in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Not only will Wellinger be hunted, but he will also be under special observation. (par)
