The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) civil lawsuit against Malaysia aims to protect “our rights and interests in accordance with the law”, the company said in a statement on Friday.
McDonald’s is seeking 6 million ringgit in damages from BDS Malaysia for alleged defamation, according to the statement of claim obtained by news agency AFP. BDS Malaysia has “categorically” denied the allegations regarding online service X, formerly known as Twitter.
McDonald’s said it “neither supports nor tolerates” the current conflict in the Middle East. “We understand and respect that boycott action is an individual decision, but we believe it should be based on facts, not false claims,” the company said in its statement. The statement was included.
In response to Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip, BDS Malaysia called on people in the Muslim-majority country to boycott Western brands such as McDonald’s, KFC and Zara. BDS accuses the companies of being “complicit in Israel’s oppression of Palestinians.”
The BDS movement is directed against the state of Israel in its image. Founded by Palestinian activists in 2005, the organization calls for an economic, cultural and academic boycott of Israel due to its occupation policies in the West Bank.
The war between Israel and the radical Islamist Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the EU and the US, has been going on for almost three months. The trigger was an unprecedented offensive by Hamas on October 7, when hundreds of fighters entered Israel and committed atrocities there.
