Champions League or Super League?: Money has the final say

It is not the European Court of Justice that ultimately decides on the Champions League or Super League….
Sebastian WendelFootball reporter

That happened quickly: less than 24 hours after the European Court of Justice gave the legal green light for an international Super League, many major clubs refused to participate in the mega project. Manchester City, Bayern, Paris St. Germain and Co. want to stick to the proven system with national competitions and the European Cup under the umbrella of UEFA.

This has delighted fans across the continent, who have been heading to the barricades since Super League plans emerged in April 2021. But does this mean the Super League will be buried before it is established?

The verdict on the “Super League” has enormous explosive power

It may now look like this. But money has the final say. The ruling by the highest European Court of Justice is a slap in the face for UEFA. It has lost its influence in the eternal battle with clubs and leagues over the distribution of money and starting places. Because the ‘Super League’ sword of Damocles now hangs over the proven system.

If UEFA cooperates in the interests of the big clubs in the future, the Super League will remain a theory. If not, the exodus will eventually come. If the first giants leave the UEFA construct, it will trigger a chain reaction.

Because whether it is the Champions League or the Super League, ultimately the clubs participate where they think their interests can best be satisfied. In other words: where the money flows the most.
