Mental health: a Christmas wish for our young people

Dear parliamentarians, do you have any resolutions for the New Year? Here’s a proposal. We are talking about the mental health of young people. If one in three people has mental health problems, if two young people in every school class have attempted suicide, if the majority of young people do not get the help they need for their mental health problems, then we cannot continue as before.

Please do something. Submit proposals to include mental health as an important topic for 2024. More education, more prevention, better low-threshold contacts are needed. It should not be the case that young people wait months for therapy, or that minors end up in prison due to lack of space.

For specific ideas, I recommend the 48-page booklet from the U24 Future Council. You may have missed it: this year, about 80 young people on this committee developed recommendations for Parliament and the administration, and experts supported them in this.

Here are some ideas from the booklet for inspiration: Federal Mental Illness Prevention Act. School subject “Psychology and personality development.” A mental health website that brings together existing offerings.
