Daniel Yule owes a lot to Matteo Joris. Under the Italian slalom coach of Swiss Ski, the Valais made the leap from a mediocre racer to an absolute world-class athlete.

For the slalom on Yule’s favorite slope in Madonna di Campiglio (It), Joris was chosen as the course setter for the second run. Austrian Manuel Feller, who won the first slalom of this winter in Gurgl (A), shakes his head resignedly after the inspection: “The Swiss coach has completely set this strong turning run for the Yule, it will be difficult to turn around.”

Yule does not benefit from a good starting position

Halfway through, the starting position is actually very good for defending champion Yule, who won three of his six World Cup victories on this slope: in fifth place he is only 47 hundredths behind leader Clément Noël. That is why SRF expert Didier Plaschy also tipped Yule’s fourth Madonna victory shortly before the decision. But shortly after the first split there was a big shock: the most successful Swiss slalom skier was eliminated!

Shortly afterwards, another Valaisian, Loïc Meillard, was unable to take advantage of his good starting position. The vice world champion in giant slalom reached the finish, but fell from second to seventh place. And because the French Olympic champion Clément Noël cannot quite match his performance in the first run, the Austrian mega-all-rounder Marco Schwarz (28) finally celebrates.

Black overtakes Odermatt

Marco Odermatt’s most dangerous World Cup opponent made the jump from 6 to 1 in the final and celebrated his sixth World Cup victory. This means that the Carinthian has an eight-point lead over Odermatt in the battle for the large crystal ball.

Another Nidwalden resident, Reto Schmidiger, is fighting unluckily tonight: the 31-year-old, who has continued to fight on his own account since being kicked out of the Swiss ski team, missed the final by three tenths in 35th place. Off the slopes, Schmidiger is doing very well: he will become a father for the first time in February!
