Good news from ski areas! About a month ago, mountain railways and restaurants warned of the effects of a skilled worker shortage. The personnel market is frozen and there is a shortage of personnel, especially in kitchens. Measures such as increasing self-service, standard menu cards or rest days were discussed. Now, just days away from the first big rush between Christmas and New Year, the ski areas are quietly giving the all clear.
“We have now managed to fill most of the vacancies in all areas (cable cars, restaurants and sports),” says Mario Bislin (65), managing director of the Bergbahnen Flumserberg in eastern Switzerland, on behalf of many other participants. The ski areas in Grisons, Valais and Central Switzerland also tell Blick that they started the season with a “good squad”.
Calvin Bachmann (34), managing director of Jatzhütte in Davos GR, is very confident. The team at the mountain restaurant is ready to bring as many “Kafi ready-mades” from the counter as possible: “We don’t have a surplus of apps. But we have made a name for ourselves in the last few years. That helps us.”
Therefore, pleasant days can await ski enthusiasts. Reduced menus are off the table, as are long wait times for food. The at-seat service is probably responsible for this.
This is due to weather conditions. “Thanks to heavy snowfall, entrepreneurs know early which systems will be operational on time and which restaurants are accessible and open. This creates planning security,” says Berno Stoffel (53), director of Cable Car Switzerland.
But things can still get difficult on certain days. Stoffel continues: “It cannot be ruled out that there may be staff shortages during busy days of the year.” Of course, 100 percent staff occupancy is unrealistic. Urs Egli, spokesman for Titlis Bergbahnen in central Switzerland, gives an example: “With more than 400 employees, all the jobs can never be filled.”
In addition, spontaneous cancellations happen all the time, as Daniel Dommann (61), CEO of Sportbahnen Melchsee-Frutt, admits: “In seasonal positions, it is common for vacancies to appear at short notice when employees arrive. People do not have a valid contract.” “There are isolated cases where they did not take their positions.”
Ernst Wyrsch (62), President of Hotelleriesuisse Graubeğen, confirms this: “There are seasonal workers who leave companies after a few days.” They are not satisfied with the work they do, they imagine it differently, or they feel homesick. These jobs are often no longer self-filling.
However, cable car boss Stoffel is confident: “The ski areas are ready for guests.” Winter sports enthusiasts should get their fröschli or chicken nuggets ASAP. Finally, the weather also needs to cooperate. No one can say no to a little more snow.
