Luca De Aliprandini finished 24th in the giant slalom in Alta Badia.

There was good news for Luca De Aliprandini last weekend: the Italian achieved his best result of the season during the home race in Alta Badia. The bad news: The 33-year-old only managed 24th place in the giant slalom. It was the first time this winter that the 2021 number two reached the finish line.

The Aliprandini is representative of the Italian men’s ski team’s slow start to the season. The frustration runs deep. Now there are statements that indicate that there is really bad air in the Italo team.

“Some people like you, others are just on the road for work.”

“If those who wear your jacket are also against you, then it becomes even more difficult,” De Aliprandini whispered into the microphone of the TV channel Rai on Sunday after the first run on the Gran Risa. It’s a swipe at your own team.

De Aliprandini does not specify which people the criticism is aimed at. You could also dismiss the statement as a careless, emotional misstep – if the next broadside hadn’t followed the second run. The Italian said again: “There was some friction. I have my way of thinking, others think differently. I’m not taking a step back. It’s not a specific person or a specific coach. We’ve changed coaches a lot in 10 years, so it’s hard to even develop a plan.”

The partner of the Swiss two-time Olympic champion Michelle Gisin (30) further complains: “Some people like you, others are only on the track for work because they have to. The results I have achieved are thanks to me and those who were close to me and believed in me.”

Who is the criticism aimed at?

Luca De Aliprandini later also let off steam on Instagram and hinted at a row within his own team: “After the race it became even harder emotionally, I never thought I would feel so empty, exhausted, short of breath and with tears in my eyes would feel. And not because of my poor results, but because I think about how big someone’s ego must be not to ask for an apology. An apology that both parties can live with.”

What just happened there? The Aliprandini doesn’t get any more specific. The Christmas holidays should come at just the right time for technicians. The next giant slalom is not scheduled until January 6. Then De Aliprandini & Co. starts in Adelboden. (cat)
