Where would we be without Lara Gut-Behrami (32)? The Swiss ski women have to deal with these questions for weeks. No wonder: while the Ticino woman was stringing together one podium finish after another, most of the other Swiss women were fighting against themselves. The result came in the national rankings after the failed home weekend in St. Moritz GR: Italy left Switzerland behind and suddenly in the lead with a 78-point lead.

The next blow came a few days later when Wendy Holdener (30) seriously injured her ankle during training – her season was probably over. That makes the weekend in the Savoyard Alps all the more surprising. On Saturday, Jasmine Flury (30) won the downhill ahead of Joana Hählen (30), and on Sunday four reached the top eleven. “They took their hearts in their hands, were present from the start, confident and courageous,” praises head coach Beat Tschuor. The result? The Swiss Ski Women retake the throne of Italy (1452:1407 points), Austria (1212 points) is third.

A break is good for Gut-Behrami and Suter

The second Swiss Guard makes people sit up and pay attention. She is so strong that even a weak Gut Behrami weekend doesn’t matter for once: she finishes eleventh in the descent and fails in the Super-G. The Ticino resident now has almost a ten-day break – which will be good for her.

Corinne Suter (29) also needs rest; she has had a cold for weeks and has not yet achieved a top 5 position. “If the immune system is compromised, things become difficult at this level,” says Tschuor. At least: as expected, Delia Durrer (21), who fell in the Super-G, was not seriously injured. This is especially important for the speed team, which has a high average age.

Slalom without Holdener: joy or fiasco?

The question remains: can the technicians follow suit in the night slalom in Courchevel (Friday)? ‘I’m curious to see how we respond. Of course Wendy misses the leader. But Michelle Gisin, Mélanie Meillard and Camille Rast are three established drivers.”

One thing is certain: Nicole Good (25) also has a chance. She recently finished third, first and second in the European Cup and leads the slalom rankings.
