Ex-manager about Schumi accident: ‘I have no hope anymore’

Willi Weber (r.) was Michael Schumacher’s manager for more than twenty years.

On December 29, 2013, Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher (54) had an accident while skiing in France and suffered severe traumatic brain injuries. Since then, little has been known about his health.

As the tragic accident marks the tenth anniversary this year, ARD will broadcast a new documentary about the German, ‘Being Michael Schumacher’. A number of comrades speak. His former manager Willi Weber (81) already talks about his former protégé in an interview with the portal Focus.de.

Weber blames himself

After ten years without any positive news, Weber has given up hope: “When I think about Michael now, unfortunately I no longer have any hope of seeing him again.”

The German still blames himself today: “I should have visited Michael in the hospital.” After his accident he “mourned like a dog”.

Supplemented with Schumacher

But at some point it came to a point where Weber realized he had to break up with Michael. Even a few years after the accident, he was repeatedly asked about the 91-time GP winner’s health. ‘Why doesn’t anyone ask how I’m doing? For me it was clear: well, now it’s over. “I have to get the nonsense out of my head,” Weber remembers.

His own book, “Gasoline in the Blood,” helped him “free himself and let go of Michael.” In it he looked back on the duo’s extremely successful time (Schumacher won seven world titles in their twenty years together): “It was not easy to confront myself with it again. But I wanted to do this. The book should be a last sentence for me.”

Back surgery and stroke

Weber has also not had it easy in recent years. He had to undergo major back surgery and suffered a minor stroke. In addition, his legs are constantly inflamed.

Considering the circumstances, he is doing well and the 81-year-old is celebrating Christmas with his family. And the Schumacher chapter finally seems to be over. (bjl)
