Cheap fuel and no road tax with this used car
Despite an excise tax discount still in effect, petrol prices in the Netherlands are not exactly cheap. On this occasion you will not have this problem. Plus, you’ll never have to pay vehicle tax again.
An exception applies to a number of cars. For example, drivers of electric vehicles currently do not have to pay vehicle tax. Before you start looking for a used electric car, you should be aware that this is about to change. In 2025 you will pay a quarter price for your electric car and from 2026 you will pay the full price.
Exempt from vehicle tax
Things are different with old used cars. Cars that are more than 40 years old are considered classic cars and you do not pay vehicle tax on them. Until 2014, the classic car limit was 25 years old. Waiting until your current car can blow out forty candles probably doesn’t make much sense since the government is about to remove this exemption.
Only cars built in 1987 or older are still entitled to the exemption from the age of 40. All cars that exceed the classic car limit by the end of 2027 will therefore never have to pay vehicle tax again. Then the classic car fun is over.
Refuel cheaply with old used cars
Because the tax office leaves you alone (when it comes to vehicle tax), you can fill up very cheaply. In the Netherlands you can fill up with LPG (autogas) for just one euro per liter. A gas installation is not interesting for most cars, as LPG cars are significantly more expensive when it comes to vehicle tax. But yes, you don’t have to worry about that with your classic car.
You will find many vintage and used cars that already have a built-in gasoline tank. On the sales site Gaspedal.nl you will find many old Volvos and Mercedes for which you do not pay vehicle tax. So you not only drive cheaply, but also in style. For example, consider this practical 1978 Volvo 245.
No TÜV requirement
Of course, driving a classic car also has disadvantages. Although the technology is simpler than that of modern cars, age often takes its toll. So you have to have a little bit of mechanical skills to keep these used cars in working order. Additionally, rust is a common problem. Fortunately, your classic car cannot be rejected because the MOT test is no longer required for people over 40. No MOT, no road tax and cheap fuel, what a pleasure.
