The vicious attack on referee Halil Umut Meler (37) is not the only headline in Turkish football these days. The traditional club Besiktas has provided more. Black and White took action after the 3-1 defeat against city rival Fenerbahçe and suspended five of their stars.
It is a drastic response to the weak season so far. Besiktas is lagging behind expectations both in the league and in Europe. Now the last game in the Conference League is coming – in Letzigrund against Lugano. Just like the team from Ticino, the Turks can no longer qualify for the knockout phase.
For both teams, it’s all about saying goodbye to the Conference League with a sense of success. Lugano expects around 4,000 fans in Letzigrund, as many as at the away match from Bruges (4,037) and significantly more than against Bodö/Glimt (1,384).
Besiktas arrived in Zurich on Wednesday afternoon. In addition to the five suspended professionals, another celebrity did not receive a plane ticket: Gökhan Inler (39). Thanks to coach Senol Günes, the ex-Nati captain is back under contract with Besiktas this season. However, he has been out of office since the defeat in the first leg against Lugano.
Inler has signed for one year. “A childhood dream has come true,” he said about the move to SDA. However, he hasn’t played yet. He was only in the selection four times. He’s not even registered for the Conference League.
This means that Inler will miss a return to Letzigrund in his farewell season as a former FCZ player. Because the midfielder wants to retire next summer. He is completing a two-year UEFA course, so that he can obtain the ‘Executive Master for International Players’ diploma at the end. “The paper gives me a solid basis to join the board of a club later.”
