Elena Curtoni’s season didn’t start the way she wanted.

“Starting the season with a bang” is how Elena Curtoni (32) describes what she experienced last Friday in St. Moritz GR. The Italian speed specialist crashed spectacularly in the Super-G on the Corviglia. Despite the violent start and hard landing, she immediately gave the all-clear and drove to the finish herself.

But Curtoni did not get off as lightly as initially thought. A few hours later, tests showed she had suffered a broken sacrum and an injury to her thigh muscle. She needs to take a break for a few weeks.

“Driving bravely and quickly”

On Instagram she now posts a black and white photo of herself with crutches. “The situation is not easy to digest,” she wrote. “But I always like to look at the glass as half full.” The injuries she suffered are probably quite painful. At least that’s what the large bruise adorning her thigh suggests.

Curtoni has competed in 259 World Cup races so far in her career. She won three times and stood on the podium nine more times. She celebrated her last triumph in 2022 in St. Moritz.

Despite the injury, she also takes positive things with her from the Engadin. “If I had any doubts about how I would present myself in the race, I dispelled them,” she wrote. And adds: “I was brave and rode fast – until I fell.” She would like to take with her the feeling of driving fast.

Because even though she won’t be skiing for a while, Curtoni knows that she has been lucky with adversity. In addition to her, four other female drivers were seriously injured in St. Moritz. Including Curtoni’s compatriot Karoline Pichler (29), whose season is over. (beer)
