Ex-FCL captain Burch now plays for Legia: what makes the Polish league more attractive than the Super League

If Marco Burch had stayed at FCL, he would have had the potential to become an absolute identification figure. At the age of eleven, the Obwalden native moved from FC Alpnach to the major FCL, at the age of 22 he became captain. In total, the 23-year-old played in 106 competitive matches for the central Swiss team.

Burch has been under contract with Legia Warsaw since the summer. A change that does not necessarily smell like progress. In the five-yearly UEFA rankings, the Polish “Ekstraklasa” is only in 20th place. Eight places behind Switzerland. But for Burch the step still makes sense: “Many people did not understand the change, but Legia is the biggest club in Poland, we play internationally and for the championship title.” The infrastructure at the record champions is top notch and the football is more physical than in Switzerland. FCB honorary chairman Bernhard Heusler also sees it that way. After leaving Basel, he accepted a mandate at Legia Warsaw, advised the Polish record champions for three years and is still in contact with club boss Dariusz Mioduski.

Poland has the better TV contract

Heusler does not understand the assumption that the Polish league is not progress for a player like Marco Burch. “The breeding ground of all prejudice is not dealing with the matter.” The Polish league has a better TV contract than the Super League and is professionally marketed, Heusler said. And Legia is a big club with enormous importance and tradition. It is no secret that Legia Warsaw supporters often confuse emotions with violence. Just two weeks ago there were massive riots at the away match against Aston Villa in the Conference League. Burch was there in Birmingham, but he didn’t see much. It is no secret that Legia fans are “very hot-blooded”, says the Obwaldner.

The fans have no reason to boo him right now. Because Burch is just a replacement. This is partly because he started the season at FCL and only landed in Warsaw on matchday seven. Burch is not worried about that: “The project at Legia is long-term, they have a plan for me. You always need time to adapt.”

Burch has signed until 2026. It is still clear that he wants to return to his FCL one day: “This is the club I love.”
