Favorite for the big ball?: Russi: What speaks for Odermatt and what speaks for black

Marco Odermatt: Blick columnist Bernhard Russi still sees the man from Nidwalden as the overall World Cup favorite despite the stream of rejections.

It’s not a break everywhere. In Austria people drive. And with everyone who has rank and name. More than 1,000 people shout enthusiastically in the finish area in Bad Kleinkirchheim: “Brace, brace, brace!” The Legends Race for Franz Klemm’s 70th birthday is a reunion of great class with much talk about yesterday.

But the main topic, surprisingly enough, is what happens during the current World Cup. It’s all about the main characters and the weather. When Werner Franz (51), the downhill coach of the Austrians, joins the conversation, it becomes dark: almost everyone sees “black” for Marco Odermatt (26).

Black has a clear plan

“We have a clear plan with Marco Schwarz,” I hear. I am told that Marco Schwarz (28) may even take a break from the speed disciplines in Kitzbühel (Austria): “The focus is not on individual races, but on the big ball.”

Well, Marco Odermatt currently has to be patient due to the many cancellations. Even if it means he’ll probably miss some scoring opportunities. Even though the other Marco has already turned his good form into a few points and even made a strong impact in Odermatt’s showpiece event, the giant slalom, in Sölden. For me, Odermatt is still the clear favorite for the overall victory, despite Schwarz’s lightning start, his progress and the upcoming marathon program.

Odermatt’s steps to success

Odermatt gains more wins and thus advances in steps of 100 points. In the giant slalom and super-G he will hardly fall off the podium and in the remaining descents Odermatt will be able to use his experience advantage over Schwarz.

However, due to the many cancellations, the drivers have to deal with a heavy load of missions. I hope that Odermatt and his companions hit the brakes early enough and take a break so that they still have enough energy for the final sprint.
