Bizarre neighborhood dispute: Jens Lehmann is on trial after a chainsaw attack

A trial against former German football goalkeeper Jens Lehmann (54) started at the court in Starnberg (D) on Friday over a bizarre neighborhood dispute. The former goalkeeper appeared in a dark suit with a blue tie and closed his eyes as the prosecutor began reading out the charges against him.

The Public Prosecution Service accuses him of, among other things, sawing through a roof beam in his neighbor’s garage with a chainsaw last summer. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the alleged crime was preceded by years of dispute between neighbors.

Burglary and property damage

The public prosecutor sees the reason for this as follows: the Lehmann garage blocked the view of Lake Starnberger in Upper Bavaria. According to the Public Prosecution Service, he also disconnected the cable of a surveillance camera.

Two trial days are planned for the trial against him for, among other things, trespassing and property damage. Lehmann’s lawyer Christoph Rückel did not want to comment before the start of the trial, but made a statement in court at the beginning of the hearing.

Ex-Schalke goalkeeper in court

“The allegations against me are not true,” Lehmann wrote on Instagram in the summer after charges were filed against him. “The damage, as always, is the enormous damage to reputation and the disregard for privacy.” The presumption of innocence applies until the trial is completed.

In 2006, Lehmann became the celebrated goalkeeper of the home World Cup, the “summer fairytale”, – especially due to his brilliant performance in the penalty shootout against Argentina in the quarter-finals. During his active time he played for FC Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal FC in London. In the 1997 UEFA Cup Final, he contributed to Schalke’s victory against Inter Milan by saving a penalty in the penalty shootout. (SDA)
