Football is the most beautiful and popular sport in the world. A mass magnet. And that includes a playground for individual idiots who repeatedly bring the sport into disrepute with their criminal behavior. Unfortunately, damage to property and attacks on life and limb are as much a part of the show as bicycle kick goals or miraculous comeback stories.

Throwing an iron rod from the local fan block at cheering FCB players is a scandal high on the list of ugly incidents. Such as the Joggeli shame in April, when FCB fans attacked security forces outside the stadium, sometimes seriously injuring them. Back to the Lugano scandal: the dangerous attack on defenseless players also shows limitless criminal energy. The fact that not a single resident of Basel is injured is a coincidence, just pure luck. But that should not stop the judges from taking strict action.
