His cap was iconic: that’s why Lugano coach Croci-Torti suddenly looks different

After almost two months without a win, Lugano is back on the road to success in the Super League. That with a Mattia Croci-Torti (41), who has hardly been recognizable since the Nati break. Because instead of his beloved roof cap, which has a cult status, he now wears glasses.

‘I can’t see anything at night anymore. Before Nati’s break I said to myself that maybe it was because we weren’t scoring any more points. That’s why I wanted to improve my eyesight,” Croci-Torti jokingly explains his makeover.

Makeover due to superstition

Lo and behold: the liberation strike against Yverdon followed (5:0). When he put on a winter hat in Bodö, Norway, when it felt like -14 degrees, he promptly went bankrupt again. The logical conclusion was that he would appear again against Lucerne with glasses, but without a cap. “I couldn’t defend myself against the superstition,” Croci-Torti explains. He should be right. Lugano wins the duel between the two FCL.

Now Lugano awaits the catch-up match against FC Basel on Wednesday. Croci-Torti will be on the sidelines again in his new style. He already announced this on Sunday. Does this also mean the third competition victory in a row?

He likes the cap better

Even though the makeover has been successful so far, Croci-Torti doesn’t seem to feel comfortable without the roof hood. “I always look better,” he says. He has been wearing the headgear since he was thirteen, he once said in a Blick interview. The power of his habit became apparent when he walked out of the media room on Sunday and immediately pulled up his hood.

Croci-Torti is also missing the roof hood due to the cold. “My ears were ice cold – and where I have no hair, I was missing my hat,” he said after the match in Lucerne. It will also be cold in Lugano on Wednesday. Four degrees are announced. If Lugano wins, he doesn’t have to worry about the winter cold.
