The women’s team EV Zug, newly established this season, conceded their first goal in the Swiss Women’s Hockey League B on Sunday. DHC Lyss player Jeli Sonderegger broke the ban – and that can almost be seen as a small miracle.

The 15-year-old striker is also aware of this. “Our goal for the match was to concede as few goals as possible,” says the student, “but also to score one when the opportunity arose.” And that comes in the tenth minute of the game. A counter-attack situation, as the goalscorer describes it. Sonderegger can go, shoot – and beat goalkeeper Chiara Pfosi. What was she thinking at that moment? «I was very happy, it was also a great joy for the team. That makes me proud.” The teenager has yet to receive the video of her historic goal.

The Zugers are the perfect frontrunners. But what’s even more impressive is the dominance with which they do this. After ten games there are ten wins with a phenomenal goal difference of 178:1. Lausanne Féminin had the mildest escape yet with an 11-0 defeat. The Lakers women, on the other hand, took the biggest blow at 0:27.

Resources make the difference

Despite the goal scored, DHC Lyss also finished at a sobering 1:24. Behind the overwhelming superiority lies the concentrated financial power of EV Zug, which set new standards in Swiss women’s ice hockey.
