Should Patrick Fischer (48) remain national coach after the 2024 World Cup or not? His job is currently becoming a political issue, and Fischer could therefore become a lame duck if he is not renewed (in sight). Fischer has an advocate in the person of his most prominent predecessor, Ralph Krueger (64).

“I have a loose contact with Patrick. “Every now and then we have coffee or lunch together,” Krueger says of his relationship with Fischer. The German-Canadian, who also has a Swiss passport since 2019, has a clear opinion on the issue of contract extension: “When you see how eager the players are to come to the national team and how motivated the NHL players are, then I am convinced convinced that Patrick is the right one. I hope he is extended as I believe his knowledge of the national team is unbeatable.”

Warning about hasty coaching changes

Krueger, who was a successful national coach for almost thirteen years from 1997, warns against being carried away by an unwise coaching change due to the last failed World Cup quarter-finals: “Patrick has gained so much valuable experience in recent years. the last few years. If you put someone in there without this knowledge, it will take almost an Olympic cycle before he really learns everything.”

The former national coach, who worked in football in addition to ice hockey and is now chairman of the supervisory board at the traditional Austrian club Austria Wien, also uses a football comparison: “If you now look at the German football team, with the many changes – this is a delicate issue. You have to be careful when making these types of decisions and always keep the big picture in mind before making them.”

“I was allowed to learn and grow”

Former NHL coach Krueger (2010 to 2013 Edmonton, 2019 to 2021 Buffalo) also believes that a national team should not only be measured by victories or defeats: “You have to feel the movement and the movement is absolutely positive under Fischer. If I had not been assessed on movement in my time, I would not have been a national coach for 13 years. I experienced both highs and lows during my time, but I was able to continue to learn and grow with the team.”
