It was not good news that EV Zug announced at the end of October: the club reported the loss of the captain. Jan Kovar suffered a knee injury on October 27 in the match against Ambri-Piotta. Research has shown that the Czech should be out for six to eight weeks.
But after just three weeks, the 33-year-old made an unexpected comeback and his knee passed the stress test. The match against ZSC was Kovar’s fourth match since his rapid return. ‘I really didn’t expect that. It really surprised me,” said team doctor Beat Schwegler in the “Luzerner Zeitung”. And emphasized that you would never deliberately specify longer downtime just to make it look good if the player would be fit to play sooner. Their predictions are based on the experience of actors with similar injuries.
What trick made this turbo healing possible? “Maybe it’s the Czech beer that makes his symptoms heal faster,” Schwegler jokes. Kovar’s response: “No, unfortunately that’s a joke.” The Czech noted that the team doctor testified that he had a higher pain tolerance: “How should I know? I’ve never been in another body.”
But it is also a fact that Kovar has already played through the play-offs with broken ribs. Speaking about the knee injury he had just overcome, the EVZ captain said: “Just a few days after it happened, the pain was no longer so severe.” When he heard about the predicted downtime, all he thought was, “Crazy.” The injury was probably less serious than initially thought.
Kovar emphasizes that he did not do anything rashly. He did not feel compelled to return, the team had done well in recent weeks. “The doctors gave me the green light when I no longer needed a splint.” He assures that he can play without pain. But he is far from satisfied with that. “I’m healthy, but not yet in the rhythm of the game.” The striker also missed access to the match in the 2:4 defeat against the ZSC Lions. “I have to improve to be valuable to the team,” Kovar said.
