The new Formula 2 champion comes from France and is called Théo Pourchaire. And Switzerland is also cheering. Because the 20-year-old belongs to the Sauber Academy. Last year he had to make way for the superior Brazilian Felipe Drugovich (23).
Pourchaire finished fifth in the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. Jack Doohan (20) ensures Australian success on the day, the Swiss Ralph Boschung (26) is 15th.
In the final result, Pourchaire is eleven points better than his first rival Frederik Vesti. The Dane missed out on the title despite winning six times in 2023 – the 21-year-old is correspondingly angry. Pourchaire achieved only one race victory, on March 5 in Bahrain. For Pourchaire, the Formula 2 adventure is over after three full years. His hopes for a place at Sauber in the premier class of motorsport were dashed.
The Hinwil team will also compete in 2024 with the well-known, harmonious but unsuccessful driving duo of Valtteri Bottas (34) and Guanyu Zhou (24). Pourchaire remains a reserve pilot. So far, he has been used three times in training for the Swiss racing team: in 2022 in Austin (18th), in 2023 in Mexico City (20th without time) and on Friday in Abu Dhabi (14th).
