Mobile phone repair: New big provider increases competition in Switzerland

The largest mobile phone repair workshop in Switzerland is established: Dübendorf-based company Swiss Mobile takes over the service provider Mobile Clinic together with the Fix Repair and Handy Doctor brands. This will create Switzerland’s largest smartphone and tablet repair provider, with a total of 32 locations, “SonntagsZeitung” reports.

Broken screens after being dropped, a gradually weakening battery: these are two common reasons to call a repair service. Shipping the devices seems unnecessary in most cases, with a long waiting period. “Our data shows that approximately 75 percent of all smartphone repairs can be done immediately,” says Marijan Andelic, owner of Swiss Mobile, in the report.

The rest of the devices either need to be sent away or replaced. But shipping or replacing a smartphone requires a lot of effort and is therefore scary.

Shipping takes time but is cheaper

Fix Repair puts the cost of on-site repair to replace a broken iPhone 15 screen at 349 francs. The exchange fee for iPhone 12 is 329 francs.

Competitors like Mobilezone rely on a centralized repair point. In the future, the mobile phone store chain wants to repair faulty mobile devices only at its headquarters in the canton of Zug and Ticino.

Repair on site or ship. Which is cheaper? “In most cases, repairs in a central location are slightly cheaper because the provider has access to technical information, employees and materials in one place,” Jean-Claude Frick, telecommunications expert at comparison service Comparis, tells SonntagsZeitung. “Employees in centralized workshops generally have more experience because they repair a greater number of devices than in local shops.”

Another important tip from Frick: When choosing a repair shop, users of Apple devices should make sure that this workshop has official certification from the US manufacturer. (euro)
