The Swiss bid for the 2030 Olympic Games overcomes the next hurdle.

The unanimous outcome of the vote in favor of a Swiss application certainly does not come as a surprise: only once (that time it was about the sports history museum in Basel) did the sports parliament not follow Swiss Olympic’s application.

It’s too easy to just criticize; we must dare to participate in the Olympic Games
Sports hero criticizes plans
“The 2030 Olympic project is a sham”

Just a year ago – on the occasion of the last meeting of the sports parliament – plans for the next Swiss bid for the Olympic Games seemed utopian and unrealistic. The radical change of course came because the IOC is planning the future Winter Games according to a new model. Sweden is also only active because of the new preconditions.

“Inspired”

The feasibility study for the Winter Olympics in Switzerland from 2030 envisages decentralized games, at existing facilities, in all four language regions and largely privately financed. According to Swiss Olympic, two-thirds of Swiss people support the new Olympic plans.

Urs Lehmann, president of the ski association and co-chair of the Swiss Olympic Games, looked back on the past eight months. At the end of March, the IOC ‘inspired’ a Swiss delegation with the new model. This new model was the game changer to return to the five colored rings after all the disappointments of the past 75 years (since the St. Moritz Winter Games in 1948). “We already have 95 percent of the entire infrastructure for the Winter Olympics,” says Lehmann.

Amherd’s plea

Even before the vote on the Olympic Games, Sports Minister Viola Amherd was euphoric to the sports parliament: “The Winter Games in Switzerland would be a huge boost for our country,” the Federal Councilor said in her plea. Viola Amherd supports the efforts, she already supported the feasibility study: “I am convinced that the Swiss concept offers an opportunity to break new ground – with more modest games that use existing facilities and infrastructure.”

What now?

What happens now after the massive yes from the Swiss sports parliament? Next week or early December, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will decide whether the Swiss project will be admitted to the dialogue phase after a positive feasibility study. Sweden and France are also interested in the 2030 Winter Games. The exchange with the interested associations is expected to be completed in the spring. The 2030 and 2034 Winter Games will be presented together next summer. Salt Lake City/USA is the clear favorite for the 2034 Games.

51. Run-up

75 years of St. Moritz In 1948, Switzerland made a serious attempt to bring the games to Switzerland for the 51st time. Twenty of these initiatives achieved the former status of an official candidacy (nowadays the IOC only talks about applications) with the IOC: 14 for the Winter Games and six for the Summer Games.
