“On December 13, we will confirm all members of the Federal Council who are available for a new term in office,” group leader Philipp Matthias Bregy told media in Bern. The center also recognizes the SP’s claim to Alain Berset’s vacant seat. “We will invite the official candidates for hearings.”

The Green Party’s candidate, national councilor Gerhard Andrey (FR), will not listen to the parliamentary group, as Bregy said. The Greens want to attack an FDP seat, but the center does not offer a hand.

In the medium term, however, the center is aiming for a second seat in the Federal Council. “We have a correspondingly clear mandate from the voters,” Bregy said. According to party leader Gerhard Pfister, the center is therefore refraining from putting itself forward as a candidate for the vacant Federal Chancellery.

It is not yet clear whether the FDP center will contest the second seat if an FDP Federal Council member resigns during the term, Pfister said. “We will only decide that when a vacancy actually arises.”

MCG-Poggia remains alone

Furthermore, the center group unanimously decided not to include representatives of the Mouvement Citoyens Genevois (MCG). This is a clear rejection of MCG State Councilor Mauro Poggia. He wanted to join the Center Party and physically met the party leadership once. There was also a “constant and lively exchange,” Pfister told media. But the center concluded that the political positions of the two parties were too far apart.

Poggia should therefore expect to sink into political insignificance. Because, without being a member of a parliamentary group, he has no access to the committees where political decisions are made.
