To date, Jan Ullrich (49) is the only German to have won the Tour de France (1997). But that wasn’t the only thing the former cycling star made headlines for. It was always about doping, drug and alcohol accidents – even after your career.
Now Ullrich talks about his turbulent life. The Amazon documentary series ‘Jan Ullrich – The Hunted’, which was presented on Wednesday evening, will be released next week. As part of this event, Ullrich said what the world has been waiting for for a long time. “I did dope, that was already clear in the documentary.” After 25 years, he finally exposes the lie of his life. “I was guilty, I feel guilty too.”
He is aware that he could have had many wonderful years if he had come out with the truth sooner. “I didn’t have the balls for it,” he reasons. But now he is happy that it is finally over. “It feels really good to say it.”
He first came into contact with doping before his victory in the Tour de France. It all started in 1995/96. “It was explained to me in a plausible way at the time,” Ullrich said. “I wasn’t afraid. That was so obvious to me at the time.”
When he entered the system, he was young and naive, Ullrich continues. “It was made so tasty and indispensable for me that I decided to do it. My career would be over if I hadn’t done it.” As a result, he covered up doping because everyone else was doing it too. Because everyone was doing it, it was “just an equal opportunity.”
However, it is unlikely that the late doping confession will have any consequences. The statute of limitations has expired and Ullrich will likely keep his wins. (beer)
