Lego jackpot! The Yellow Castle is located in the Uster find of the century!

Patrick Toggweiler

When Uster’s bankruptcy office, together with curator Manfred Fuchs, found hundreds of boxes in a basement in October, no one could have guessed what kind of treasure was inside. Only after laborious sorting do 600 unopened Lego sets come to light one by one. AfoL (adult Lego fan) and Lego retailer Pascal Schafflützel from Gallusbricks.ch estimate the first 150 sets for Watson. He concludes: “You can safely call it a find of the century.”

The man knows his stones. The auction of the first 150 sets raised record amounts. The ‘Garage with Automatic Gate’, a set from 1956 that has never been sold anywhere in the world in this condition (unopened), sold for 7,000 francs. The royal castle (6080) also found a new lord for 3,660 francs, well above the usual market value.

But the real hammer now only comes with the second swing: Liquidator Fuchs has found a “yellow castle” among the 600 sets. This legendary set of 14 minifigures and 767 parts is the most valuable ever sold. Only 19 of these have been sold since 2017. In 2019, a ‘Yellow Castle’ changed hands for 9,800 francs – current estimated value: 9,981 euros (9,600 francs). This applies to copies in good condition.

Is the set from the find of the century in good condition? We ask the curator: “I am not an expert,” Fuchs emphasizes, “but I estimate that the packaging is about 90 percent.” Those interested can see it for themselves. On site in Otelfingen on Thursday, December 7 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM (by appointment only), or online. «We took even more photos of the boxes than in the first auction, although we only received good feedback. Deliveries are almost complete and customers are satisfied,” says Fuchs.

And there are actually some traces visible on the packaging of the yellow castle. Obviously an adhesive strip has been removed in one place and the box has some creases. But remember: the box is 45 years old – and still sealed.

And how about a third swing with another 150 sets? Is it possible that Fuchs has more yellow castles in its range? ‘No, we only have the castle once. But what we still have is an unpacked and assembled yellow castle.”

Anyone who wants to admire the rare piece live can do so: at the Steenbazaar on December 3 in the Stadthofsaal Uster. What other highlights does the second wave of 150 sets have to offer?

The steam locomotive (7730) is also in the top 10 of most valuable sets (estimated price 4,438 francs), as is the city plan (810) for an estimated 2,950 francs and the Lego hobby set USS Constellation (398) for 1,356 francs. . The heart of the author of this article was warmed by lot number 28, the police car with siren. But even this collection offers more than 300 francs.

The 2nd auction runs until Monday, December 11. Experience shows that prices rise sharply in the last few minutes. The highest bid for the yellow castle is already over 1,000 francs.
