However, he did not have to operate on the fracture in his right foot (maleolus bone). At first he hoped he was just stretching his foot. «In the beginning it hurt a lot. It turned out to be something bigger.”

Using a boot, the three-time Grand Slam winner tried to put no further pressure on the fracture and stabilize the foot. This was not pleasant: “It was painful and I had had the most complicated two weeks.” He now wears an ankle brace to protect him from further missteps.

Is it enough for the Australian Open?

Wawrinka summarizes that all in all he has come off lightly. Still, it will probably be a race against time for him. His goal is to first compete in the “Kooyong Classic” invitational tournament in Melbourne in January and then the following week in the Australian Open, which he won in 2014.
