Martina Voss-Tecklenburg talks about her illness and the mistakes she made.

Former national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (55) admitted mistakes almost two weeks after retiring from the German Football Association (DFB) and provided insight into her illness. “I didn’t feel well. I didn’t feel well before the World Cup,” the 55-year-old said in an interview with ZDF: “I was sick and didn’t know how long this process would take. I realized that now I just have to should be myself. And that’s what I tried.”

Voss-Tecklenburg reported chest pressure, panic attacks and insomnia. After a conversation with her husband, she ‘almost completely collapsed’. She said she had “fears, insecurity and emptiness in my head” and spoke of feeling “as if I had unplugged the plug.”

Reading caused irritation

The former national coach of Switzerland (2012-2018) is now taking a critical look at her controversial lecture on the Bavarian Dentists’ Day during her holiday. “Afterwards you can say: how stupid – wrong,” said Voss-Tecklenburg. She informed the DFB that public appearances would take place after her sick leave ended.

They took the vacation “to get completely healthy, to just use these weeks again, to come back, to be able to participate in life again,” she said. Of course she has made mistakes: “But to some extent I have had to pay the price for that, both with my health problems and in the media.”

While analyzing the World Cup elimination in the summer, Voss-Tecklenburg fell ill, and the association subsequently approved her for a vacation. The national coach caused irritation with lectures.

Communication with the DFB via lawyers

Communication with the DFB later took place through lawyers. After a stalemate, the contract was terminated in early November; Horst Hrubesch is currently looking after the team as interim coach.

According to Voss-Tecklenburg, a “private” conversation will soon take place with DFB boss Bernd Neuendorf. She wanted the opportunity to tell him a few things: ‘how I felt and what touched and influenced me and perhaps also disappointed and irritated me to some extent.’ (AFP)
