Excitement in Congo: Servette defender Bradley Mazikou (l.) suddenly announces his resignation from the national team.

During this international break, qualifying for the 2026 World Cup starts in Africa. Congo-Brazzaville, drawn up as an underdog in a group with Morocco, Zambia, Tanzania and Niger, is counting on a lot of Swiss power at the start of the campaign. There are three Super League players in the squad: YB striker Silvère Ganvoula (27), Servette defender Bradley Mazikou (27) and Lausanne’s Morgan Poaty (26).

At the start of the qualifying phase, Congo lost 2-4 in Zambia. Despite a beautiful goal from his Bernese storm tank Ganvoula. The YB summer newcomer marks the interim 1:1 equalizer with a rocket from a distance. It is Ganvoula’s fifth goal in his twentieth international match for Congo.

Super League players are no longer in the mood

But after the match it was not the defeat that dominated the discourse in Congo. But a loud bang in the team. Just a few hours after the bankruptcy, six national players announced their resignation from the national team. Also the two Super League players Mazikou and Poaty.

Mazikou, who came on as a substitute in the second half but was withdrawn from the match ten minutes later due to an injury, entered into a full confrontation with the association. On his Instagram account he shares a statement in which he indicates that he no longer wants to play for Congo in the future.

«I am writing this message to inform you that I am permanently resigning from the national team. I will no longer accept offers in the future. Good luck to my brothers.”

Poor organization within the association

It is not known what exactly caused the mass exodus in the team. But it probably has to do with the poor organization within the Congolese association. French sports journalist Romain Molina describes this on X as “insane”. “The association and the Ministry of Sports have ridiculed the players for far too long,” he writes.

It is not news that there are major structural problems in Congolese football. From the players’ point of view, the final straw was the poorly organized trip to Zambia for the World Cup qualifier, which many players in Europe had to make on their own. There were also advance reports of missing airline tickets and airline tickets sent too late. (sbe)
