Major restrictions on air traffic will be imposed on Monday due to a strike by air traffic controllers in France. The number of flights will be reduced by 25 percent at Paris-Orly and Toulouse airports, and by 20 percent at Bordeaux and Marseille. However, delays and disruptions in air traffic are expected from Sunday evening to Tuesday morning.

Euroairport Basel was also affected. When asked, Blick said: “So far 7 departures and 7 arrivals to/from Euroairport have been cancelled.” For example, the Easyjet flight from Basel to Rome was cancelled. British Airways also has flights to London Heathrow. Flights to Toulouse, Amsterdam, Berlin, Hamburg and Barcelona were also cancelled.

Normalization only on Tuesday

Flights departing from London, Berlin, Toulouse, Barcelona and Frankfurt cannot land in Basel. The outage is expected to last until 06:00 on Tuesday morning. Only then can air traffic return to normal. Air traffic controllers are fighting for higher pay. And for better training of young staff.

Strikes by French air traffic controllers have not only slowed down flights and connections within France in the past. Flights passing exclusively through French airspace were also affected.

Work stoppages are not uncommon in France. There was recently a nationwide strike that severely restricted many parts of the French transport sector, including SNCF. The last general strike was a month ago.

There are also movements in Germany

This issue is also present in Germany these days. Last week there was a warning strike that paralyzed rail traffic on the long-distance route. The background includes collective bargaining and demands from the train drivers’ union GDL for better working conditions (555 euros more wages per month with three hours less work per week). If no agreement is reached, the possibility of a strike during the Christmas holidays in Germany cannot be ruled out.
