Fear of an “away match” in Berlin: will Nagelsmann finally create euphoria in the German emerging markets?

Julian Nagelsmann is about to make his home debut as national coach.

The European Championships will start in Munich (De) in exactly 210 days and yet our northern neighbors are not yet in a European Championship frenzy. This is also due to the mixed results of the German national team in their preparation so far. The German Football Association (DFB) pulled the cord in September, fired Hansi Flick (58) and placed Julian Nagelsmann (36) on the sidelines.

Since then, the DFB team has been doing well again. The two previous matches under Nagelsmann resulted in a win (3:1 against the USA) and a draw (2:2 against Mexico). The first real tough test awaits the Germans on Saturday evening in Berlin, then in the friendly match against Turkey.

The Bosphorus side have qualified early for the European Championships in Group D – they are in first place in the group, ahead of Wales and World Cup semi-finalists Croatia. A win over this strong Turkish team is Nagelsmann’s chance to get the crowd behind the team again.

Explosive duel in Berlin

It is a special match in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. More than 2.8 million people with a Turkish migration background live in Germany. On the German side, there is even fear that an away match could take place in front of more than 70,000 fans. “We’re happy it’s going to be loud. Both the German and Turkish fans should shout very loudly and raise the alarm, but everything is fair and everything is peaceful,” Nagelsmann said at the press conference on Friday.

Just like in Switzerland’s match against Kosovo, fan relations in Berlin are likely to be in balance on Saturday evening. Turkey last played against Germany in Berlin 13 years ago. The Germans at the time called it an “away match” because of the large number of Turkey fans. The stadium with more than 74,000 seats is also completely sold out on Saturday. A perfect backdrop to finally stoke the EM euphoria in Germany. (jsl)
