Curling star Tirinzoni and her team: record world champions want their first European title

A European Championship medal in sight: Silvana Tirinzoni (r.) and her team start as title candidates at the European Championships in Scotland.

It’s actually amazing. The Swiss top women’s curling team around Skip Silvana Tirinzoni (44) is the world record holder with four World Cup titles in a row, but the title has never been achieved in Europe.

Now the world champions of the series with Tirinzoni, Alina Pätz (33), Carole Howald (30) and Selina Witschonke (24) are chasing their first European title on Saturday at the European Championships in Aberdeen, Scotland. So far, silver has been the highest sentiment in Europe twice, most recently in Sweden a year ago. “We travel to the European Championships with a good feeling and a lot of expectations,” Tirinzoni said on the Swiss Curling channels.

Strong opponents at the start of the European Championship on Saturday

The team, which was supplemented with Witschonke after Briar Schwaller-Hürlimann (30) was eliminated in the summer, has been playing well since the start of the season. Tirinzoni and Co. played strong tournaments in Canada in the autumn and thus achieved number 1 in the world rankings.

Now the world number one will meet defending champions Denmark and Sweden at the start of the European Championship. Will Tirinzoni now win her first European Championship gold? The Zuricher from CC Aarau says: “It will be a difficult match. Therefore, any medal would be a success.”

The minimum goal is of course qualification for the World Cup in Canada; the eight best teams receive the ticket. With the new qualifying mode, internal selections effectively no longer exist in Switzerland; the Tirinzoni team is – just like the men’s team around Skip Yannick Schwaller – ready for the big title fights. Schwaller’s team also won European Championship silver in 2022. (MD)
