Back in February, it was announced that ‘The Walking Dead’ actor Steven Yeun would also be joining the star-studded cast of Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’. The actor had spoken in several interviews about the fact that director Jake Schreier, who also directed Yeun in several episodes of the Netflix series ‘Beef’, had booked him for an exciting role in the new Marvel adventure. While the rumor mill is already buzzing about what this role could look like, nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
While official confirmation from Marvel is still pending, there is now a credible source shedding light on his role. Yeun’s close colleague Robert Kirkman, the creative force behind “The Walking Dead” and “Invincible,” opened up about this topic in a conversation with comic book artist David Finch. He just explained that Steven Yeun will be taking on the role of Robert Reynolds, aka Sentry in “Thunderbolts.”
Steven Yeun Becomes Sentry in “Thunderbolts” – With a Comic Costume!
Robert Kirkman explained it to Finch (via ), that Yeun called him after a dress rehearsal for “Thunderbolts.”. Kirkman didn’t care that this information would still be confidential: “He called me after the dress rehearsal and… I hope this isn’t a spoiler or that I’m getting him in trouble now. I don’t know, maybe. We’ll see. I don’t care. I don’t work for Marvel. What are they going to do?”
The creator of “The Walking Dead” further explained: that Yeun’s Sentry costume would have some similarities to Yeun’s costume from the ‘Invincibles’ series.: “He called me and said, ‘I was just at the dress rehearsal for Sentry. I think now I only play superheroes that are yellow and blue.” He said that during the dress rehearsal he said, ‘Ah damn, I forgot Invincible is yellow and blue.'” This means that the colors of his ‘Thunderbolts’ costume match the suit that Sentry also wears in Marvel- comics.
Who is Robert Reynolds, aka Sentry?
Sentry is considered one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe. Similar to Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, Experiments with the super soldier serum were also performed on Robert Reynolds – which is said to have had even stronger effects on Sentry. His abilities include not only superhuman speed and strength, but also the ability to shoot light from his hands and heal himself. In the comics, Sentry can even control the minds of his opponents and rise from the dead.
Moreover, the former soldier is mentally unstable and therefore a danger to the “Thunderbolts”. So he would initially have to join the newly formed group of super and anti-heroes, but then be stopped by them due to his freak-outs. We can’t wait to see what skills and character traits Steven Yeun actually brings to the role as Sentry in the MCU movie.
We will get the final answer to this on July 23, 2025, when ‘Thunderbolts’ hits theaters here.
