Switzerland, number 1 ski country! This has recently been the case not only with men, but also with women. But be careful: Red-White-Red wants revenge. The Austrians are behind in the national rankings with 289:302 points, but that means nothing.

“It is now up to me to turn things around and step on the toes of the Swiss women a little,” says Roland Assinger. The 50-year-old has been head coach of the Austria Women since this season. Most recently, he coached at the Davos gym for three years. I made several friends and learned a lot,” says Assinger.

Was he also a spy? “Now you say that,” says Assinger, laughing. He says approvingly: “They simply ski better in Switzerland. Now we are trying to catch up.”

Switzerland got a wadschn

The beginning has been made: After a winter in which the ÖSV athletes suffered a lot of blows, problem child Katharina Liensberger (26) recently finished third in the slalom, as well as in the speed competitions with Cornelia Hütter (31) and Nina Ortlieb (27). has two winning drivers.

Now some will answer: Switzerland has that too! WHERE. But: Swiss-Ski cannot keep up in terms of width. “A big plus is that we have more starting places at the World Cup,” says Assinger. That is the case in every discipline; for example, nine Swiss women but twelve Austrians can start on the Matterhorn. It is similar in Super-G (+4), giant slalom (+3) and slalom (+2). Swiss women’s head coach Beat Tschuor says: “We have to get more points with fewer athletes. The goal would be to have more starting places.”

Why are Swiss women in the minority? Simple: they did not gain a single World Cup place through the European Cup last season, but Austria got ten. This requires top three places in the discipline rankings. Many riders now have a guaranteed place in the World Cup – overall European Cup winner Nadine Fest (25) could even start in any race.
