New details about the case surrounding the national coach: is Inka Grings still viable after she was involved in a financial scandal?

A look back at the past: Nati coach Inka Grings is carried away by a story about her involvement in men’s football in 2019 and 2020.

No, this story about national coach Inka Grings (45) has nothing to do with the disastrous record of only one win in fourteen international matches this year. But it’s still a bad own goal for them.

Grings is involved in the financial scandal surrounding the accused husband of former Germany and Switzerland national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (55). The day after the revelation in Germany by “Die Bunte”, the “Rheinische Post” reported new details: The proceedings against Grings personally are already considered temporarily halted. It will eventually be stopped when the national coach has paid out a “sum of money that must be paid to the public treasury”. Grings agreed to this payment.

Grings did not think it necessary to inaugurate the SFV

In Switzerland, however, it was the SFV’s statement that made people sit up. “We have heard through the media,” the association says in addition to the standard statement that it does not comment on ongoing proceedings.

Last chance for Grings

There has been an investigation into the national coach in Germany for months, but Grings obviously did not think it was necessary to inform her employer about this. Given this fragile basis of trust, is this still sustainable for the SFV? The association does not comment on this question. Grings himself also remains silent about the matter despite Blick’s request.

From an employment law perspective, misconduct at a previous employer, which in no way affects the current employment relationship, is not automatically a reason for dismissal. However, different standards could certainly be applied to public figures. Keyword: role model function. And it will be quite difficult for Grings and also for the SFV. Not only because she did not disclose her involvement in the case prominent in Germany to the association.

Legally, Grings is not considered convicted

Because accepting dirty money to boost your official salary as coach of the SV Straelen men’s competition team, as accused, is a realistic scenario, especially in women’s football. In Switzerland, players and coaches at all levels earn little or nothing. The temptation could be to secretly earn something extra if you receive a corresponding offer – Grings now emerges as the worst possible example, according to the motto: the national coach did it too.

What may be exculpatory for Grings is that she is not legally considered to have been convicted, as many media incorrectly reported on Wednesday. With her payment to the state, her case is considered closed without a conviction. And the damage to Grings amounted to 13,350 euros. This means that it is only a side note to the overall indictment. Hermann Tecklenburg (75) is accused of withholding an amount of 862,000 euros from social security funds as chairman of fifth division SV Straelen.

Grings was the highly regarded coach of the men’s team there from April 2019 to June 2020. But now she has scored a huge moral own goal during this period, as it only now becomes apparent.
